A New Chapter for Public Charter Schools in Alberta

Alberta’s public charter schools have entered a new phase.

We are proud to introduce Alberta Public Charter Schools (APCS): a renewed identity that reflects the growth, strength, and increasing impact of charter schools across the province.

This is more than a new name or a new website. It is a step forward in how we show up, how we communicate, and how we work together to support students and families across Alberta.

A Growing and Evolving Sector

Public charter schools have long been part of Alberta’s public education system. They are tuition-free, publicly funded, and accountable to Alberta Education. What sets them apart is their ability to deliver specialized programming that meets the diverse needs of students.

Over the past decade, demand has continued to grow. Thousands of Alberta families are actively seeking access to charter school spaces. At the same time, Alberta itself is growing. Communities are expanding, student populations are increasing, and the education system is being asked to do more.

Public charter schools are part of the solution.

Why This Moment Matters

As the sector has grown, so too has the need for a clearer, more unified voice.

APCS represents this evolution.

This new identity strengthens how charter schools are understood across the province. It provides a more accessible and consistent way for families, policymakers, and partners to engage with the sector. And it allows us to better communicate the role charter schools play within Alberta’s broader public education system.

At its core, this is about clarity.

Clarity that charter schools are public.
Clarity that they are accountable.
Clarity that they are delivering results and responding to real demand.

A More Connected, Coordinated Voice

The launch of APCS also marks a shift in how we work together.

Across Alberta, charter schools are already delivering strong outcomes for students. The opportunity now is to ensure that story is told consistently and confidently.

When we are aligned in how we communicate, we strengthen public understanding, build trust with stakeholders, and create the conditions for meaningful progress.

Our voice only gets stronger with more schools around the table. If you’re ready to join, let’s have a conversation.

Looking Ahead

This is an important moment, but it is only the beginning.

There is more work to do to ensure that all families who want access to public charter schools can find a space. There are important conversations ahead about growth, facilities, and long-term sustainability. And there is a continued opportunity to contribute to a strong, diverse, and responsive public education system in Alberta.

APCS exists to support this work for our member schools and the students and families they serve. We are moving forward together—as a connected, collaborative sector with a clear and growing role in Alberta’s public education system.

It is a privilege to serve as President and support this work.

Sincerely,

Dee-Ann Evans

President, Alberta Public Charter Schools (APCS)
